Mississippi Athletic Conference play gets underway Friday for boys basketball teams, but the favorites already are clear.

In a preseason poll of eight league coaches, Davenport Assumption emerged as the team to beat. The Knights are off to a 2-0 start to this season after finishing 11-12 and fifth in the MAC last winter.

Assumption received four first-place votes, one ahead of Davenport Central. The Blue Devils (1-1) boast a dynamic frontcourt and have finished in the top third of the MAC each of the past three seasons.

North Scott (2-0) garnered the other first-place vote, but overall the Lancers were picked to finish fourth behind defending champion Bettendorf.

Pleasant Valley (3-0) is like the Bulldogs in that the household names have graduated but expectations remain high. Coaches have the Spartans even with North Scott in the fourth spot.

From there, it's forecasted to be Clinton, Burlington, Davenport North, Muscatine and Davenport West.

Hot start

Last season, Davenport West didn't get its first win until Feb. 7 after dropping 16 straight games.

Already, though, the Falcons have matched last year's win total by emerging victorious from their first two games last week.

West fell to Iowa City High 52-46 on Saturday to slip to 2-1, but the progress is real.

In the two wins - against Cedar Rapids Prairie and Morning Star - the Falcons scored 56 and 65 points. In 22 games, last season, West never scored 60 points and eclipsed 50 just twice.

Prairie also helped Muscatine to an early win after the Muskies went 2-20 last winter.

Short-handed

A week into the season, Davenport Central is dealing with more issues than a young roster.

Turns out, it's short on names, too.

Already without juniors Nihjil Hoover and Tony Bakeris, who played varsity as sophomores last season, Central is now down another three players.

Returning varsity player Stevon Harris along with newcomers P.J. Golden and Kevin Holfeldt are no longer on the team.

Sophomore Jeremy Smith has been moved up to fill the gap, but the Devils suit up only 12 varsity players.

Automatic

Last year North Scott point guard Brandon Voss led the MAC at the foul line, shooting 92 percent in 16 games. For the season, he hit 108 of 123 free throws, good for 87.8 percent.

Through two games this year, Voss is 25-of-27, and more than half his points have come at the stripe. Maintaining that pace, he would finish the 21-game season with some 262 makes to barely 20 total misses.

End of Season Comments from Coach Bigler:

The boys basketball Falcons capped their season with an exciting tournament run.  I was extremely proud that the players, students, and fans of West High School were rewarded with the Falcons advancing to the Iowa Class 4A sub state championship game and the Sweet Sixteen.  The team's improvement was very evident in a stunning upset of the #3 ranked Bettendorf Bulldogs by the Falcons.  The effort of the players and the support of the student body showed the Quad City area the true meaning of Falcon Fever.  I think I can speak for the players and the coaches in saying it is GREAT TO BE A FALCON!

Below are the articles for boys basketball during the tournament run.  Attached is a video from the Bettendorf game.
